The journey of Origin began with a simple vision — to create honest, natural cleansing products inspired by Kerala’s traditional wisdom.

After spending several years working abroad in Qatar, Mr. Balakrishnan returned home to Kerala with a strong desire to build something meaningful of his own.

For many Malayalis working abroad, Kerala is more than just a hometown — it is an emotion. Returning home brought him closer once again to the culture, traditions, nature, and resources he had always been deeply connected with.

During this phase, he worked closely alongside Ayurvedic practitioners and became increasingly aware of the power of plant-based formulations, herbal extracts, and traditional cleansing methods. Being a science graduate with a background in Botany, he developed a deep interest in understanding the medicinal value of natural ingredients and how they could be effectively used in personal care.
At the same time, he observed a growing gap in the market. Consumers were searching for products that felt natural and trustworthy, yet many brands lacked ingredient transparency. Products focused heavily on artificial fragrance, color, and visual appeal, while the true functional value of cleansing was often overlooked.

That realization became the foundation of Origin.

2006 — The First Black Soap

Inspired by Kerala’s rich natural resources — especially coconut oil and traditional herbal ingredients — Mr. Balakrishnan began experimenting with formulations that prioritized functionality over appearance.
Using natural extracts and ingredients known for their medicinal and skin-beneficial properties, he created the very first Origin bathing bar: a distinctive black-colored soap made from natural raw materials.
Unlike many conventional soaps in the market, the black soap was never designed to be aesthetically flashy.
Its strength lay in its authenticity, performance, and ingredient philosophy.

Humble Beginnings

In 2006, Origin officially began operations in a small shed with just two to three workers, including the founder himself.
